We were out this way in 2013 2012 and 2011.

There's pictures of previous trips to Lava Canyon HERE, HERE and HERE

Tried to get out here on May 13, 2012 but the last 8 miles of the road was closed due to
snow. This is often the case in Spring. Got as far as Marble Mountain.

The Lava Canyon Interpretive Center opened 5/7/14. That trip report is HERE.

For planning purposes, the road from Marble Mountain to Lava Canyon is rarely open
before the second week in June. Interestingly, the road was just opened a couple of
days ago but there wasn't a spot of snow ANYWHERE between Marble Mountain and Lava

The obligatory stop at McClellan

So I get to Lava Canyon and there's not a soul around. Get ready to walk around
and what do I see but this huge screw imbedded in my tire. These Dunlops must be
nail magnets because I picked up one about this size out at Sunrise (Mount Rainier)
a couple of years ago.

It was in there too deep to pull out and removing it when I was in the middle of
nowhere probably wasn't a good idea anyway. When I had the new tire put on I had them
install Ride-On.... so... either the screw didn't puncture the tube or Ride-On
sealed it. No telling how long that screw has been in there, but I probably picked
it up today. Something that big I would have noticed.... Obviously, hard left turn
cornering would not be a good idea on the way home. With no tire gauge I had no way
of knowing if the tube was leaking. Figured my best plan was to get moving and see
if I could at least get to Cougar before it went flat.

Made it home, thankfully. No Ride-On gloop on the threads so I guess the screw
stayed inside the sidewall. Left a BIG frigging hole in the tire though. Filled
it wth Permatex.

Guess it will be ok. This is a pretty new tire with not many miles on it so I'm
not all that keen to replace it.

No yummy pizza at the Lone Fir in Cougar. Didn't want to stop in case the tube
had a slow leak. When I rode by they didn't look like they were open anyway.
