Goils are such suckers for cowboys...
How prophetic (and sad) that 5 months from when this was taken, Julie started
advertising for her "dream cowboy" on Internet dating sites.. :(
Oh well....




It was chilly and overcast until we got out Hood River way. After that it was a
perfect bluebird day.






Up until a few years ago you could get gas in Shaniko (but not at this station).
If you're on a motorcycle and doing this ride you'll want to fill up in Maupin.
















Up until just a few years ago the Shaniko Hotel was open for business. It's a grand
old building with an amazing lobby. A dispute between the owner and various other
interests caused him to close it. I've read various reasons.... disputes over water
rates, disagreement about the future direction of the town and so on. All of this
conflict is a shame since Shaniko could be quite the destination location if the
people there could get it together.


















Julie packed a nice lunch and baked some birthday cupcakes. There's a nice picnic
table here to enjoy them.
