Tygh Valley is considered by some to be the beginning of the Barlow Road because
many wagon trains crossed the Deschutes River at Sherars Bridge and proceeded west
bypassing The Dalles. However, the National Park Service treats the first tollgate
site at Gate Creek on the White River as the beginning of the Barlow Road.
