Carol Chaffee and J.W. Everitt are sue-happy, extremely unpleasant people.
If you agree with *ALL* of their numerous opinions and if you comply with *EVERYTHING*
they tell you to do, no matter how outrageous or unreasonable, you will find them
to be very accommodating, cheerful, friendly and agreeable.
However, the first time you *DON'T* do *EXACTLY* what they want, they will turn on
you like vipers.
Don't take my word for it.... just do a Google search and read about all of the
pain and misery these two have spred around over the years.
If, after doing your research, you still want to stay at the Bearcat Lodge or
do business with them in any way, more power to you... just don't say you weren't
warned.
As Ms. Chaffee stated: telling the truth is not slander.
The BearCat Lodge, Seneca, Oregon
If you Google Bearcat Lodge you'll see some interesting threads about the little
Peyton Place that is Seneca, Oregon. I went there with an open mind except that
I am generally predisposed to like anyone and anything that the Oregonian newspaper
dislikes. But after meeting him, I have to say that the negative reviews, comments
and opinions I've seen posted about J.W. Everitt (the co-owner) are probably accurate.
Opinionated, self-absorbed and obnoxious doesn't even begin to describe this guy.
After we got home, there were threats that "we owed him money" for simply inquiring
about room rates and availability there. Mr. Everitt apparently works hard to
foster his bully persona... and he clearly expects to get his own way in his
dealings with others. Whether his "my way or the highway", "I must win and you
must lose" blustering accomplishes anything productive is not my concern... but
his attitude certainly makes me want to avoid any future dealings with him.
Since posting this review, we have heard from several other J.W. Everitt victims
and they paint a very unappealing picture of this creep. Carol Chaffee, his
"partner" is a sue-happy Attorney, licensed in Oregon and Idaho and practiced in
Washington before resigning from the Bar there. These two will sue anyone, any
time, for pretty much anything. Customers, potential Customers, Vendors, small
businesses... doesn't matter. One gets the impression that their primary source
of revenue is derived from dragging hapless victims into court. As any Lawyer can
tell you, being right or wrong is irrelevant in our "system of justice". Any
unscrupulous Lawyer can tort you into the poorhouse if they feel like it, which
is what may happen to you if you get in these people's crosshairs.
Do whatever makes you happy but personally, I would steer waaaaay clear of these
characters. The Townspeople, including the Mayor, would apparently prefer to have
the Aryan Nation buy this place to use as their national headquarters rather than
have to endure Mr. Everitt's presence. While I disagree that this would be a good
alternative, I can see how they would feel as they do.
I generally support all Biker-friendly businesses... but this place is going to be
an exception. "Friendly" is not a word that I would use to describe this cat.
The Bearcat Lodge gets our worst possible review
AVOID THE BEARCAT LODGE, J.W. EVERITT AND CAROL CHAFFEE AT ALL COSTS!!
Caveat emptor.
Negative comments and reviews posted on the Internet cut both ways. Anyone doing a
Google search on "Bearcat Lodge reviews, Seneca Oregon" will find this page so
be careful who you threaten, Ms. Chaffee. As it is, there are a substantial number
of negative Bearcat Lodge/J.W. Everitt reviews already out there.... including on the
ADVrider forum, which is where I received my first inkling that maybe the Bearcat
Lodge is a place best avoided. Ms. Chaffee and Mr. Everitt don't need to be going out of
their way to generate even more reasons to avoid the Bearcat Lodge. Through their
own actions, they are generating a substantial amount of bad press that would give
anyone doing "due diligence" reason to be more than a little cautious about contacting
these people.
To be clear:
Reservations were *NEVER* made. In fact, during several prior conversations with Ms.
Chaffee we were told that reservations needed to be made through J.W. only. By the
time J.W. finally returned our calls, several days later, we had come across a lot
of Internet reviews, mostly negative, that made us feel that staying at the Bearcat
Lodge could be problematic. Obviously, our gut instincts about these people turned out
to be correct.
We did stop by at the Bearcat Lodge at around 15:00 on July 4th since it was a
checkpoint on the Rose City Motorcycle Club 2010 Grand Tour. We were informed
that "there was lots of room" if we wanted to stay there. In fact, J.W. became quite
agitated and indignant when we informed him that we had plans to stay in John Day
instead of at his place. So Ms. Chaffee's claims that "they were fully booked up,
turned people away and prepared meals for us" are totally bogus.
Within five minutes after arriving, it was blindingly clear that spending an entire
evening enduring this obnoxious J. W.
blowhard would be a real pain. We were all extremely thankful that reservations were
not made. There is no way we would want to spend an evening with this opinionated,
big-mouthed boor!
Here's the Bearcat Lodge's stated policies: You have to be invited to stay by J.W.
and there is no set charge for room or meals. Just a jar to deposit what you thought
the meal and or stay was worth to you.
From what I've learned from reading other reviews, guests are apparently expected to
be captive audiences for nightly concerts played by J.W. and you are also expected to
spend the evening in the bar listening to him bluster on about whatever. I guess if
you like his kind of music this might not be an imposition .... I have no idea (and
didn't care to find out) what his singing and musical skills are.
From what I can gather, if you comply with everything they want, listen attentively
to J.W.'s rants and don't disagree with any of his many opinions, fawn over his
singing and leave an adequate amount of money in the fish bowl, you'll have no
problems. Unfortunately, I busted my knees decades ago so I am unable to genuflect
in his majesty's presence.
8/1/2010 - More Updates: You don't have to be a potential customer to run afoul of these
sue-happy characters. Listen to what the owner of Oregon Trail Sports has to
say about J.W. Everitt and Carol Chaffee:

ED Comment: I think since you have a shop, you need to get the word out to as many
shops as possible not to take them on as customers....
Debating with Carol Caffee and/or J.W. Everitt is like wrestling in the mud with pigs.
You just get dirty yourself and the exercise is pointless because the pigs like it.
These are just plain bad news people. Deal with them and you *WILL* get burned.
