It's been a while since we did
Eagle Creek.
Usually too crowded for our tastes.
GETTING THERE: Eagle Creek exit off of I-84 Eastbound. For more details and
lots more pictures click
HERE or HERE or
HERE.
If you like waterfalls, you'll like the Eagle Creek hike. If you don't like
people, you'll want to hit the trailhead EARLY! We headed out at 08:00 and there
were already cars in the parking lot. By the time we got back, the last two miles
were packed with tourists.
The hike to Twister Falls (and beyond) is easy but long. It's pretty much
impossible to get lost out here. However, there is a small degree of exposure
so idiots do have a habit of falling off a ledge now and then.
The Eagle Creek trail as far as Tunnel Falls was built 100 years ago as part of
the Historic Columbia River Highway project. You can still see concrete on some
of the early sections. Note the handrails. This was probably quite the outing
back when automobiles were a new thing.
There's a great view of Punchbowl Falls from the lower punchbowl viewpoint. But
today the creek was too deep and running too fast to get out far enough for a good
picture.
Julie's favorite log bridge.
Tunnel Falls was really roaring today!
