Mount Saint Helens National Volcanic Monument - 7/24/10

180 miles round trip

Returned to Lava Canyon on July 1, 2011.

Franz Lake
Created by the wetlands below the Bonneville Dam
Skamania, Washington

Sams-Walker State Park, Skamania Landing, Washington

Very peaceful. High Noon on Saturday and not a soul around

The Columbia River and Oregon on the other side

The obligatory pictures of Mount Saint Helens from the McClellan viewpoint

Some nice hikes at these locations. Lava Canyon was probably the most
difficult, only because the trails were very dangerous. One mis-step and
bye-bye... The two mile round trip leg to Lower Smith Creek was the most difficult.

Lava Canyon Falls. This suspension bridge wasn't so much fun to cross

The view from the middle of the bridge
It doesn't look like it in these pictures, but it's a l-o-n-g way down....
...and the bridge span is L-O-N-G!....

Refreshing... except for all of the stay on the trails because there
have been multiple fatalities at this location signs

And here's some Obama supporters out to prove that Darwin was right....
I had to zoom to get these nitwits so you can't see the rapids and certain
death below when one of these clods makes a wrong move.

Mount Saint Helens, Ape Canyon

This forest fire, just West of where I was, was burning pretty good
by the time I got to Amboy, Washington. I was worried that they might
close the roads so I started scooting once I saw all that heavy smoke
straight ahead when I hit Cougar, Washington.
That's Mount Saint Helens off to the right.
The fire is a little Northwest of Yale Lake.
