Details on how to get to the
Herman Creek Trailhead can be found
HERE.
Indian Point wasn't in the thick clouds this time. It wasn't totally clear but
at least you could see across the river. Nice view of Mount Adams from up here.
Nice view of Wind Mountain and the Columbia River up here.
After you visit Indian Point, go back down the way you came for a few dozen yards.
You'll see this trail marker showing the way to a trail that looks like it's going
straight up. Actually, the next mile or so on this trail isn't that bad. This is
the Ridge Cutoff trail and it links up with the Nick Eaton trail. The junction is
well marked and obvious. You will turn right to descend back to the Herman Creek trailhead.
The Nick Eaton trail might be slightly more difficult to go up versus the traditional
route, but.... both trails are 2.6 miles long and have approximately the same elevation
gain. In terms of avoiding crowds and better views, I'd go "up" the Herman Creek
trail and return down on the Nick Eaton trail, which makes a nice 13 mile loop.
After a couple of miles you'll come out into this clearing. Today there was a
great view, warm sun, light cool breeze and NO PEOPLE!!!! And even a log to sit on.
This was a perfect spot for lunch and to enjoy the view and solitude. This is the
only rest stop of it's type on this entire hike so take advantage of it!
There were still some low clouds around here at noontime when we stopped for
lunch. The view West towards Bonneville Dam, Rooster Rock, Hamilton Mountain and
so on were actually a lot better than this picture might indicate. I was too lazy
to drag out my new Nikon D7000 to see what kind of a picture it would take. But based
on the blue-ish tint to the pic I took across the river at Indian Point, I'm thinking
maybe I need a different UV filter for these types of foggy conditions...
