I've had the honor to visit with Lawrence and Ada Ruth Whitmore for quite
a few years. Ada Ruth is an encylopedia of knowledge on the area and is
a natural-born story teller. She reminds me a lot of my Godmother who
could also go on-and-on about "the good old days" when she and my Father
were young and growing up in Southie.

Ada Ruth says she's never been off the hill for longer than three weeks in
her entire life and her stories about how "good girls" don't go to
Cleveland always amuse me. Being the black sheep of the family and
considering my sorted past I suppose I would be more of a Cleveland boy
than one of the fellows from Bickleton.

I didn't stop in to visit this trip. Long story and not fit for posting
here. Ada Ruth is still spry and mentally all there but she is no
longer young (nor am I). I was 6 months old when she married Lawrence.
Dear Lawrence has been gone for 6 years and Ada Ruth still misses him
horribly. I wish I had a partner like that in my own life but it is
what it is. Not that those two were always peaches and cream. Some of
Ada Ruth's best stories were about "fights" they would have, often about
purchases Lawrence would make without consulting her. Ask her about that
huge bell in the back of the museum barn!

I've obviously never been present during one of those disagreements but
I'm guessing there was no hollering. Well, perhaps.... Ada Ruth is no
cupcake. But I'm guessing it was more like Ada Ruth giving Lawrence the
silent treatment. She did say once that she went weeks without saying a
word to him over some flap that they had. No word on whether he was
making his own meals and sleeping on the couch during those times.
I'm sensing that she has a gaze that would stop a charging rino in his
tracks. That said, I have rarely met a couple who's love for each other
was so great and so enduring. For an incredible 69 years not including
their courtship. Having never had a "partner" who was actually a partner
I can only imagine what a loss Ada Ruth has been enduring.

I hope to get to visit her at least once more before she or I pass on.

This is an annual ride for me. Often, if the weather is good, more than once a year.
Been coming out here since around 2005 or so. But didn't have a web site or a decent
camera back then. The Bluebird saloon [re]opened in ~ 2006. Before that, the town was
just a whistle stop. Had lunch in Goldendale back then.

Check the Bluebird Inn's HOURS before heading out.

The Bluebird is the oldest operating tavern in the state.

This building was constructed by Jacob N Jensen for C.E. Flower and Doctor Hamilton
Blair for a drug store and dwelling in the spring of 1887. It became a saloon that
fall. In 1903 a Brunswick pool table was purchased that remains in the Bluebird
today. A barber shop was in the back of the tavern in the early years.

The east side of the building was added for living quarters in 1965. At about the
same time, the unspoken policy was broken when women were finally allowed and even
welcome to the tavern.

A brick hearth and chimney for wood heat was added inside and a boardwalk on the
outside constructed in 1986. More changes were made in 1987 when a deck and a brick
barbeque were added to the west side. In 2004 a new front porch was constructed.
The wagon wheel rail was added in 2006 to separate the bar and pool table from the
restaurant side.

There have been many owners of the Bluebird and it has operated under several
different names. The Bickleton Club was used for twenty five years and was the
longest used name until the current name. The present name has been used since
the late 1970s.

Here is some updated information about the Bickleton area:
The Methodist Cemetery is just East of Bickleton.
The IOOF Cemetery is on top of the hill above Bickleton to the north on a paved road.
The school at the Whoop n Holler museum was originally located 1/4 mile NW of
the intersection of East Road and Matsen Road. In Fairview.

Stopped in Klickitat and got these pictures of the caboose the
Klickitat Rail Trail guys put here some years ago. Ran into a very
old school panhead owned by a patchholder who was having lunch at
the bar across the street. I didn't want to go in to bug him and
taking pictures of his scoot without permission could be viewed as
disrespectful So I didn't.

Brought back a lot of memories for me though. Hardtail frame and a
springer front end. I also had a rigid frame but at least had hydraulic
forks. A kiddie tricycle squeeze horn same as I had but bigger. No
front fender and just enough "stuff" on it to make it run and be sort
of legal. He had a squeeze with him.... not many babes these days
could handle packing on a scoot like this. And certainly no one I've
packed since BratGirl (tm).

Stopped to pay my respects to Lawrence and his parents (above).
